5 Medicine Branches to Benefit Artificial Intelligence

Many people suppose that the development of artificial intelligence may lead to the end of the Human Era. Stephen Hawking, like many other scientists, supports this point of view and believes that works on artificial intelligence can destroy humanity. But many people engaged in medicine oppose his suggestion.

Here 5 medicine branches that will only benefit from artificial intelligence application.

  1. Checking drug resistance

Scientists are working at using artificial intelligence  to predict human body’s response to 2 types of breast cancer chemotherapy. People have different reaction to the same medicine. A team of doctors headed by Peter Rogan, a professor working at University of Western Ontario, published their research results in Molecular Oncology magazine, that suggests that using AI doctors may predict what patients can have positive dynamics of using a drug Paclitaxel.

  1. Treatment control

In USA there is a startup called AiCure that uses artificial intelligence and a mobile app to check if a patient takes necessary medication. A smartphone camera provides medication-taking proof. It is a real-time service gathering data from the apps. According to the conducted research, not abiding by the prescribed treatment, a patient will encounter health deterioration, and the treatment costs will increase.

  1. Drug development

In 2014 IBM Watson announced that it was going to cooperate with the companies Johnson & Johnson and Sanofi to develop a supercomputer receiving and understanding the results of scientific and clinic research. The outcomes of the project are supposed to be used in developing new medicine and treatment methods. The company supposes that it will help the doctors to find the most efficient drugs for some specific group of patients minimizing side effects.

  1. Help for people with Alzheimer’s

Washington University and its faculty of computer science studies the possibility of using artificial intelligence to help people with Alzheimer’s to sustain and improve their independence and quality of life. The cognitive system, being developed by artificial intelligence, can replace some memories and skills needed to solve everyday tasks that these people lack due to the disease.

  1. Checking your health condition with the help of wearables

Zulfi Alam, personal devices manager in Microsoft, believes that thanks to intelligent algorithms of the Internet of Things and wearable technologies usage, we will be able to get all necessary data about human body activities, detect medical symptoms, and improve physical and mental health condition.

The use of robotics can strongly improve the healthcare system. Considering that artificial intelligence is only in the beginning of its development, it cannot threaten to destroy or replace the humanity, thinks Daniela Hernandez from Kaiser Health News.

A good example of artificial intelligence usage is a case that happened with a dermatologist  Kavita Mariwalla using specialty-specific, cloud-based EHR service Modernizing Medicine to find some medical data and treatment results. She had a patient suffering from a really rare skin disease, the patient couldn’t afford the prescribed medicine.

Mariwalla managed to find the information about a drug used in such cases within only a few minutes. The service selected and processed data of about 3,700 exporters, 14 million patients with similar medicine and treatment results.
