MMwit Turns 1!

Modernizing Medicine’s Women in Innovation and Technology (MMwit) initiative recently celebrated its first year launch. Shortly after joining Modernizing Medicine last year, I saw an opportunity to bring the organization together to nurture and support the amazing women at this innovative six-year old healthcare technology company. MMwit was born with the mission to build a community of men and women to help develop and enable women to lead and innovate.

In the last year, we have held monthly events focused on the areas of Mentoring, Internal Events and Community Outreach. We co-sponsored a community event at FAU Tech Runway with eMerge Americas WIT, which hosted a panel discussion on “Transitions + Courage = Growth.” Two of Modernizing Medicine’s incredible and inspiring leaders, Dr. Julie Servoss and Mihai Fonoage, spoke about transitions in their personal life, as well in their careers at Modernizing Medicine. We also hosted an event for the PACE Center for Girls, where the high school age girls learned more about our company and participated in an Hour of Code to open their eyes to a possible career path.

The internal events team organized “Bring a Child to Work Day” where employee’s children ages 5 to 18 spent the day at Modernizing Medicine and learned about software coding, anatomy and sales & marketing. This team also organized “Bring Your Parent to Work Day,” an extension of the LinkedIn event that started two years ago.  We’ve also launched an MMwit book club and MMfit wellness program featuring onsite yoga classes. On the mentoring front, we kicked it off with a panel to share perspectives on the common myths, do’s and don’ts of mentoring including best practices.

After launching several women’s groups throughout my career, it never ceases to amaze me how much professional and personal growth I see in the women who participate and take leadership roles within these groups. We’re incubating talent and skills in an environment where they feel inspired to try new ideas and work across teams to make them happen. One of the MMwit leaders, Monica Labrador, spearheaded the MMfit program bringing together a dedicated, cross-sectional group of employees around the practice of Yoga. According to Monica, “witnessing the yoga classes launch has given me the confidence to explore new ideas in the workplace. The unique opportunity to grow into a leader and create a platform where connections organically arise has brought me a deep sense of personal and professional satisfaction.” One of our leaders for Community Outreach, Giana Truitt, says that MMwit “has brought her out of her comfort zone giving her increased awareness and confidence of her skills and capabilities.” It is in these statements and accomplishments that we inspire and empower other women and girls to innovate and lead.

Congratulations MMwit on your first year anniversary!
