Boca Raton Modernizing Medicine’s CEO wins EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award

By: Stephanie Cornwell

CEO and Co-founder of Modernizing Medicine Inc., Daniel Cane was named the Entrepreneur of the Year in the Florida region’s Emerging category.

Modernizing Medicine Inc. is the creator of the Electronic Medical Assistant (EMA), a cloud-based, iPad native electronic medical record (EMR) system.

Modernizing Medicine was created in 2010 by Cane and Michael Sherling, MD, MBA, the co-founder and Chief Medical Officer, with the goal of developing a more efficient means to record and analyze patient information in a mobile, fast and effective way.

EMA was designed by practicing physicians, and is used by over 5,000 physicians today, 50,000 users in total.

After graduation from Cornell University in 1997, Cane co-founded Blackboard Inc., an educational technology company.

When asked why he decided to create EMA, Cane stated that “My next challenge was in healthcare, I wanted to increase patient outcome.”

By eliminating piles of paperwork in a doctor’s office, and using this touch-based application, finding a patient’s records becomes much easier. This allows for more time and more clear communication between patient and doctor.

Modernizing Medicine has 18 physicians training users to program EMA. When explaining the simplicity of the system, Cane states that his own children know how to use it.

EMA uses anatomy and visuals to help physicians make accurate diagnoses. The doctor can touch the part of the body on the screen and analyze where the problem originates.

Cane states that EMA “Collects data and brings it to the forefront.” It allows physicians to compare notes, see trends and visualize information over time.

EMA adapts for the specific field of practice of each physician. The categories offered include dermatology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, gastroenterology, urology and plastic surgery.

Modernizing Medicine has lived up to the name, as it is changing the medical field and bettering the relationships between physicians and their patients.
