What is CommonWell Health Alliance?
CommonWell is a not-for-profit trade association with the simple vision that health data should be available to individuals and providers regardless of where care occurs.

Why is membership in CommonWell important?
CommonWell members are using their diverse, collective experience across the care continuum to break down the barriers that have stood in the way of efficient data exchange. CommonWell members are committed to building interoperability into their software so that providers can maximize a trusted network for data exchange while maintaining their existing workflow.

Modernizing Medicine joined CommonWell as a Contributor Member. Why is this meaningful?
Contributor Members are the foundation for CommonWell Health Alliance, as this membership level provides the guidance and governance for the Alliance. As a Contributor Member, we receive access to and benefits of CommonWell standards and services as they become available, plus our team has the opportunity to support the design, development and application of technology that implements CommonWell specifications.

Who are other members of CommonWell?
CommonWell includes many of the major health IT companies in the United States. Founding members are Allscripts, athenahealth, Cerner, Evident (then known as CPSI), Greenway Health, McKesson and Sunquest. Other members include CareCloud, eClinicalWorks, HIMSS, Kareo, lifeIMAGE, MacPractice, MediPortal, ImageTrend, Mana Health, Aprima, Brightree, CVS Caremark, MEDHOST, MEDITECH, Merge and others. For a current list of members, visit www.commonwellalliance.org/members.

How does Modernizing Medicine stand to benefit from membership in CommonWell Health Alliance?
By enabling the exchange of patient information, physicians can access and exchange information on the patient from other participating providers. Today this information includes medical history such as medication, allergies, diagnoses, lab results and more.

By joining such a vital national organization and working with other major health IT companies, Modernizing Medicine can help expand access to CommonWell cross-vendor interoperability services.

Modernizing Medicine plans to incorporate CommonWell-approved services natively into its systems, allowing participating clients to work seamlessly within their existing workflows. This incorporation can move providers towards true, nationwide interoperability with the patients they serve. Additionally, participation can allow Modernizing Medicine to deliver interoperability to its clients through more cost-effective technologies than are typically found with add-on solutions.

How does CommonWell stand to benefit from Modernizing Medicine being a member?
As the nation’s leading developer of specialty-specific, data-driven and cloud-based electronic health records (EHR), practice management and revenue cycle management systems, Modernizing Medicine is in a unique position to positively contribute to data sharing to improve patient outcomes, both at an individual patient level and larger population health level.

How do Modernizing Medicine’s clients stand to benefit from the company’s membership in CommonWell Health Alliance?
Once Modernizing Medicine begins offering CommonWell services, clients may be able to more easily share patient health data with other providers using other participating health IT companies. Patient information can flow more smoothly, and less manual data entry may be required by providers and their staff.

Clients may be able to gain interoperability through more cost-effective technologies than are typically found with add-on solutions.

From inside EMA™, clients may be able to query and retrieve patient care documentation (CCDA) from other participating institutions of CommonWell services where the patient has visited. For instance, if a patient comes to a practice and they recently also had tests performed by a participating institution (a hospital, for example), the practice should be able to query the documentation from the hospital, retrieve the patient documentation it wants to bring into EMA and store that data as part of the patient’s chart.

The functionality may help to alleviate the common pain point of trying to determine important missing pieces of a patient’s prior medical history.

Do I need to become a member of CommonWell to see the benefits?
No. Modernizing Medicine plans to make the CommonWell functionality available to our modmed EMA clients who elect to participate and who agree to certain terms and conditions of use.

Does membership in CommonWell apply to all specialties?
All of Modernizing Medicine’s EMA EHR products are expected to include this functionality. The inclusion of gMed’s products will be determined at a later date.

What is the process?
More information will be made available to Modernizing Medicine’s clients as the functionality becomes available.

Is there a cost to use CommonWell services offered through Modernizing Medicine?
At this time we don’t plan to have technology costs for Modernizing Medicine’s clients to use CommonWell services. However, there may be other associated costs for implementation and training.

What does interoperability look like?
CommonWell created a Services Demo Video to illustrate interoperability and its benefits to providers and patients.
