ModMed® OBGYN: The Obstetrician’s Journey

In designing ModMed OBGYN, our goal was to emphasize simplicity, show the essentials and leave out the clutter. As OBGYNs, we work in a fast-paced environment where decision-making needs to occur quickly and skillfully. That requires prominent visibility of a patient's key information.

Let's say a patient has called your office, with the news that she's pregnant. During scheduling, your front desk will get the date of her last menstrual period and mark her pregnant. As you can see, there is a very clear P next to her name, after we mark her pregnant. You can also see her gravida and para status, gestational age and estimated date of delivery.

The flowsheet is something all OBs are familiar with, we use it to track a pregnancy and it needs to be easy. You need to be able to quickly document in the sheet and have the ability to elaborate and be as detailed as needed. It should also show important trends, so that when a pregnant patient suddenly develops high blood pressure, you can see that quickly, and respond.

However, the flowsheet only shows part of the story. OBGYNs need a place to see and gather information, even before we walk into the room to say "hello."

For this, we have developed the OB Management List, which is our version of the all-important problem list. This is where we highlight the main problems for the patient during this pregnancy. This is the list that the OB can interact with, remove the problems that aren't relevant, leave detailed comments about a problem, and see recent prenatal labs and fetal ultrasounds.

The OB can also see consultant notes, for example, from maternal-fetal medicine. All this information is on one screen, so that the OB can gather all the necessary information they need before walking into the room and seeing the patient.

Interoperability is vital for OBGYNs because we need this information available to us at the hospital. More than any other specialty, we live in two worlds: outpatient, where we see patients for prenatal care, and inpatient, where we will be managing their labor.

So next, I want to show you the antepartum record. Every time information is entered during a visit, or outside of the visit, the antepartum record is updated, so the information going to labor and delivery is up to date. Finally, we want to have a simple process to conclude the pregnancy, where the MD can enter the delivery and document important information, like type of delivery and complications, if any, that may be relevant to future pregnancies.
