In designing Modmed OBGYN, our approach is one that emphasizes simplicity, showing the essentials, and leaving out the clutter. As OBGYNs, we work in a fast-paced world, where decision-making needs to occur quickly and skillfully, and that requires prominent visibility of the key information about a patient.

Okay, so with this patient, I want to mark her pregnant. Say, a patient has called into your front office and they want to schedule a new OB appointment so they'll let your front desk know their last menstrual period, and with that, they would be able to mark her pregnant. And, if you go over to her name, right by it, you see a very clear "P" that marks her as pregnant,and then you can also see her gravita and para status, her gestational age and estimated date of delivery.

The flowsheet is something all OBs are familiar with, and we use it to track a pregnancy — it needs to be easy and quick to document in the sheet — and yet, have the ability to elaborate and be detailed, if need be. It needs to show important trends, so that when a pregnant patient suddenly develops high blood pressure, you can see that quickly and respond. The flowsheet only shows part of the story. OBGYNs need a place to see and gather information even before we walk into the room to say hello.

For this, we have developed the OB management list, which is our version of the all-important problem list. This is where we highlight the main problems for the patient during this pregnancy. This is the list that the OB can interact with, remove the problems that aren't relevant, leave detailed comments about a problem, see recent prenatal labs and fetal ultrasounds. The OB can see consultant notes, for example, from maternal fetal medicine. All this information is on one screen so that the OB doesn't have to navigate away, and still gather all the necessary information she needs before walking into the room and seeing the patient.

Interoperability is vital for OBGYNs because we need this information available to us at the hospital. More than any other specialty, we live in two worlds: outpatient, where we see patients for prenatal care, and inpatient, where we will be managing their labor. So I want to show you the antepartum record. Every time information is entered via visit or outside of the visit, the antepartum record is updated, and so the information going to labor and delivery is up to date.

Finally, we want to have a simple process to conclude the pregnancy where the MD can enter the delivery, and document important information, like type of delivery and complications, if any, that may be relevant to future pregnancies.

Those are the features of Modmed OBGYN that have been built to follow the flow of a pregnancy, and they were designed with the obstetrician in mind.
