Round Two in Cali with ZDoggMD

Almost absurdly unextreme. Those are the three seemingly contradictory words Zubin “ZDoggMD” Damania uses to describe his kitschy style. If you don’t know ZDoggMD yet, you’re missing out. Skip your Netflix binge-watching and tune into YouTube for a few hours tonight.

When ZDoggMD is not seeing patients at the revolutionary Turntable Health clinic in Las Vegas, he is a medically-renowned rapper producing award-winning videos that entertain and educate, and can be found speaking at events all over the country.

Damania (and his alter ego ZDoggMD) is the founder and CEO of Turntable Health, a membership-based (with pricing just like your neighborhood gym) primary care and wellness ecosystem in Las Vegas. Simply put, Dr. Damania is helping to fix primary care to help fix medicine. The clinic focuses on great care, approachability and overall wellness. An article from Huffington Post Entertainment recently featured the rapping physician.

And if you’re not one of his 8.5 million YouTube video views, we suggest you tune in – stat. Is 50 Cent your jam? Check out In Da Lab. More of a T.Swift fan, you’ll enjoy Blank Script.

Just off the set of his next viral music video, we had some time to chat with ZDoggMD on his upcoming involvement with our Rock the Docs tour that’s heading to Laguna Cliffs Marriott this June.

Modernizing Medicine: What are a couple of things about our company that pump you up?
ZDoggMD: Unlike a lot of EHR vendors, the fact that your products and services are specialty-specific, and that you actually care about usability as a primary concern, certainly stand out. The fact that docs build and continue to improve the software is another plus. And your CEO Dan is simply adorable. Can I say that?

MM: Any sneak peeks of what we can expect from your Rock the Docs keynote in June?
Z: I don’t want to give too much away, but let’s just say I’m pretty excited about this one. We’ll leave it at that. You’ll just have to register to see for yourself.

MM: What do you hope physicians and patients learn from your entertaining and insightful videos?
Z: They have a voice, and they should make it heard. If a clown like me can use social media to get people to think, ANYONE can.

MM: What are you most passionate about?
Z: I’ll start with the serious stuff. Dry roasted macadamia nuts. High in monounsaturated fat, very filling and great on low-carb diets. Also transforming healthcare to make it collaborative, patient-centered, but also focused around physician and provider well-being.

MM: If you could perform a duet with any notable individual, who would it be and why?
Z: Weird Al. Because then we could parody any famous duets. Like Ebony and Ivory. And Salt n’ Pepa.

MM: Most embarrassing, medically inclined (and PG-rated) story?
Z: In med school I was doing a physical exam on a patient actor-volunteer. They were supposed to have some sort of interesting heart finding. This was at the University of California San Francisco, so I just assumed the most insane sort of zebra diagnosis was hiding in this patient somewhere. I put my scope on the left side of their chest and didn’t hear squat, so I moved it to the right side and heard some sort of something. I immediately turned to the patient and said, “You ma’am have situs inversus.” She looked at me quizzically, “What does that mean??” And I said, “Your heart is on the wrong side of your chest.” Horror struck, the patient turned in panic to my preceptor, who just shook his head. Nope, her heart was on the normal side, I was just an idiot. The moral? I’m really not sure.

MM: When you’re not practicing medicine, or starring in the next viral YouTube video, where can we find you?
Z: You can find me in da club, bottle full o’ bub. Actually that happens almost never. More often I’m at Turntable Health (our clinic in Las Vegas) or forcing my daughter to practice violin.

MM: Words to live by.
Z: “It takes two to make a thing go right. It takes two to make it outta sight.” Shocking that they are song lyrics from Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock, right?
