Finish your year-end reporting with confidence

Appointment surges. Flu season. Wrapping up the calendar year can be challenging for medical professionals, but reviewing end-of-year reports is important for planning the year ahead. Here are several high-level reports you can use to create a roadmap for making 2026 your most successful year yet.

Financial reporting

Perhaps the most important financial report for medical practices to generate is an easy-to-understand profit and loss statement. When this report includes major expense and revenue categories, you can use it to easily identify and interpret your cash flow. To create a practice management-focused profit and loss statement, include the following key components:

• Limited number of major expense categories and subtotals
• Comparison column listing the same expenses from last year
• Cash flow calculation that subtracts estimated taxes and principal debt payments from your net income

It’s also recommended to exclude carryover expenses from previous years for the current year statement. Profit and loss statements can be used to reveal your practice’s operating income, pre-tax income, and net income or final profit numbers. When compared to the prior year, you can identify what works and if anything needs to be adjusted, helping you manage financial risks.

One example of a high-level report that readily displays helpful information regarding financial performance is the ModMed Analytics Productivity Report. The report shows charges, payments, adjustments, and patient and encounter counts. With many options to filter and display, you can quickly identify trends within clearly labeled timelines, helping to facilitate understanding of overall practice profitability.

Clinical reporting

With the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services began to apply negative payment adjustments to low-performing clinicians’ reimbursements. This program remains in effect and is a critical component of any medical practice’s year-end clinical reporting.

Quality payment program data must be submitted to ensure timely and accurate reimbursement for procedures and visits billed to Medicare and Medicaid. Those who do not submit any data receive a negative payment adjustment. To give you actionable insight, our MIPS Dashboard displays your current score and progress in each of the four performance categories. Ready to submit your data? You can send your data to CMS through our qualified registry or one of several other interfaces.

Research has found that some of the highest-performing physician group practices in the country focus on partnering with physicians who are driven to go the extra mile for patients. Patient outcomes reports help determine the quality of care your providers administer. Key categories of patient-reported outcomes that you can survey your patients on to get an accurate picture of care quality include:

• Quality of life
• Functional status
• Symptoms and symptom burden
• Health-related behaviors

When you use ModMed, you can identify clinical care gaps that may affect patient outcomes with our Advanced Clinical Targeting report. This report, filtered by patient parameters, helps target patients for necessary follow-ups, improving care continuity and showing opportunities for outreach.

Operational reporting

To sustain efficient healthcare delivery, overall operational efficiencies must be captured and measured to make strategic decisions. An effective operational management report should include data from the following key areas, enabling your practice to respond quickly to inefficiencies and take advantage of improvement opportunities:

• Work Relative Value Units (wRVU): Compares the work involved with performing a service to all other services and procedures
• Collections: Helps identify where you stand on debt collections
• Denial rates: Helps identify areas for billing improvement
• Provider compensation compared to wRVU production: Helps assess risks related to provider retention

In addition, a general staffing and employee utilization report can help you understand your employee management effectiveness. This includes recruitment and retention efforts, cost management, and overtime pay. From there, you can make adjustments to your management strategy and methods for improvement next year.

For example, with ModMed, you can see a high-level overview of staff utilization with the Attendee/Scribe report. It’s quick to see at a glance which staff members are working with specific providers or on specific procedures, helping identify potentially overburdened staff.

Patient reporting

Many patients pay increasingly high deductibles on their health plans. When choosing a provider, a patient’s overall experience with your practice takes top priority when deciding whether they’ll return. Running regular patient satisfaction surveys with open-ended questions to elicit feedback helps gauge if you’re meeting patient expectations. After all, patients expect better value for visits.

Beyond patient surveys, there are other important measures that your practice management and scheduling systems can reveal if you know where to look. Search your software for these critical components to develop a comprehensive patient engagement report for yourself:

• Patient attrition
• Declines in established patient visits
• New versus established patient volume over time
• Patient visits per day per provider

This data can help you measure your progress in maintaining patient loyalty and satisfaction, attracting new patients, and sustaining longer-term revenue. Use these numbers to determine if you need to create a more welcoming office environment or update your website and marketing efforts for 2026.

The New/Established Patient Count Trend report from ModMed compares new and established patient trends using visuals and can be filtered by provider or facility. This report shows how your patient base has evolved over time.
