Chief Executive Officer
Daniel is President, CEO and co-founder of South Florida based Modernizing Medicine, Inc., a healthcare IT company that is revolutionizing the way in which medical information is created, consumed and utilized to increase efficiency, lower costs and improve outcomes. Daniel was named the 2013 Sun Sentinel Excalibur Awards Palm Beach Small Business Leader of the Year, honored as a Palm Beach County Ultimate CEO by the South Florida Business Journal, and as an exceptional leader and innovator with a “40 Under 40” award.
Daniel and Modernizing Medicine co-founder, Chief Medical Officer Michael Sherling, M.D., have grown the company from inception with three rounds of financing, the most recent round occurring in August 2013 with a $14 million investment by Summit Partners, a global growth equity investor. Since founding the company in 2010, Daniel has led his team to raise a total of nearly $30M in funding and to hire almost 150 employees.
Frequently invited to speak at various forums around the State of Florida and across the country, Daniel had the honor in 2013 to participate in The Human Experience, the first TEDxDelrayBeach event. At the United Nations (U.N.) headquarters in New York, he was a panel member at the Economic and Social Council Civil Society Forum: “Building Partnerships in the Field of Education through Science, Technology and Innovation.” He has also spoken on South Florida Technology Alliance CEO panels and other local technology events.
An entrepreneur, Daniel has a BS in Applied Economics from Cornell University, where, as an undergraduate, he co-founded Blackboard Inc., raised over $100M in venture capital and in 2004 helped take the company public on the NASDAQ (BBBB). In 2011, Blackboard was sold for $1.6B.
Active in the local community, Daniel serves as the Vice-Chairman of the Board at the South Florida Science Center and is on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Palm Beach County. Additionally, Governor Rick Scott appointed Daniel to the Florida Atlantic University Board of Trustees for a term beginning August 2013 and ending January 2016. He is an active mentor to entrepreneurs, and a member of the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County, the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce and several local advisory boards.
Today, Daniel works, lives and enjoys life with his wife and three children in sunny South Florida.
MICHAEL SHERLING, MD, MBA
Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Michael Sherling is the co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of Modernizing Medicine. He’s responsible for developing and designing the dermatology-based software, and supervising the medical arm of ophthalmology, orthopedics, and plastic surgery software. Under his leadership, Modernizing Medicine has gained 14% of the US market share in dermatology and raised over $7.1 million in capital.
Michael has been a practicing dermatologist since 2006. He is currently practicing in a comprehensive skin care dermatology group in Palm Beach County, Florida. He is an expert in medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology.
Michael is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology. Prior to relocating to Florida, he was the Director of Clinical Trials in Laser Medicine and the Associate Director of Laser Medicine and Skin Health at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He is a leader in resident education, having been the youngest physician to serve as the Associate Residency Program Director for Harvard Medical School's Department of Dermatology. He has several publications in peer reviewed medical literature.
Michael obtained his B.S. in Biology at Brown University with honors in 1996, his MD from Yale School of Medicine with honors in 2002, and his MBA from Yale School of Management in 2002. He received his clinical training at Harvard Medical School, where he served as chief resident in dermatology. He also completed a laser and cosmetic fellowship with Dr. Rox Anderson at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine. He is licensed to practice medicine in Florida.
Chief Financial and Operating Officer
Karen serves as both Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer. She oversees all financial, human resources and facilities operations for Modernizing Medicine, and focuses on corporate strategy and planning. Karen brings more than twenty years of financial, accounting and operational experience to Modernizing Medicine. She has broad financial experience in technology-based organizations including enterprise software, B2C technology, systems integration, web hosting and managed services. She is strategically minded with a proven record of driving profit improvement, leading business growth, establishing and scaling operations and building operationally-focused teams.
Prior to Modernizing Medicine, Karen served as the Chief Financial Officer for Campus Management Corp, a software development company that provides post-secondary education institutions with administrative and academic solutions. Karen also served as Senior Director of Business Planning and Finance for Verio, Inc., an NTT America company that provides global web hosting and managed services. Karen began her career in public accounting with nine years of advisory and attestation management experience serving both public and privately-held companies across a wide range of industries.
Karen is a certified public accountant and a certified global management accountant. She holds an MBA with honors and a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting, both from the University of Florida.
Senior Executive Vice President and General Counsel
Mark has over a decade of experience of providing legal representation to technology companies. Prior to joining Modernizing Medicine, Mark was a partner with K&L Gates LLP, an international law firm. Prior to K&L Gates, Mark served as Of Counsel with the firm Broad and Cassel and as an associate in the Silicon Valley offices of Latham & Watkins LLP and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, P.C. Mark also previously served as Director, Legal—North America for Avanex Corporation, which was a Silicon Valley based provider of photonic processing solutions. Mark received a B.A. degree from Duke University and a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School.
