Receives Palm Beach Sun Sentinel Excalibur Award

Boca Raton, FL – April 11, 2014Modernizing Medicine, Inc. announced today that its co-founder and CEO, Daniel Cane, was named the Sun Sentinel Excalibur Awards Palm Beach Small Business Leader of the Year. The award recognizes the top business leader in the region for 2013 who exhibits integrity and excellence within his field. Furthermore, a panel of past recipients selects winners based on their success within the South Florida business community and their commitment to the values of innovation, company growth and community contribution.

“Thank you to the award’s past recipients and to the Sun Sentinel for this recognition and honor,” said Daniel Cane, co-founder and CEO of Modernizing Medicine. “Every day our team at Modernizing Medicine works to save physicians time and improve patient outcomes, and it’s important that we also positively impact the regional economy and our community in the process. I’m grateful to the entire Modernizing Medicine team for their continued support, enthusiasm and dedication to our mission.”

Daniel and Modernizing Medicine are revolutionizing the way in which medical information is created, consumed and utilized to increase efficiency, lower costs and improve outcomes through the creation of the Electronic Medical Assistant® (EMA™) – a cloud-based, specialty-specific electronic medical record (EMR) system. EMA can be accessed through a native iPad application or by a computer with Internet capabilities and is pre-coded with deep medical knowledge. EMA adapts to the way each specialist practices and remembers physician preferences.

Since the company’s founding in 2010, Daniel and co-founder and Chief Medical Officer Michael Sherling, M.D. have grown the company with three rounds of financing, raising approximately $29 million in equity. The company now employs 170 staff members and has captured over 20 percent of the U.S. dermatology market. Active in the local community, Daniel serves as a trustee on the Board of Florida Atlantic University, as the Vice-Chairman of the Board at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, and is on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Palm Beach County. He is a mentor to entrepreneurs, and a member of the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County, the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce and several local advisory boards.

Daniel holds a BS in Applied Economics from Cornell University, where as an undergraduate he co-founded Blackboard Inc., raised over $100M in venture capital and in 2004 helped take the company public on the NASDAQ (BBBB). In 2011, Blackboard was sold for $1.6B.

Since 1978 the Excalibur Awards have been presented by Sun Sentinel Company, LLC to for-profit business leaders in South Florida who have demonstrated their commitment to the values of innovation, community contribution and company growth, recognizing the impact of their success on their community. Winners will be featured in an upcoming issue of Sun Sentinel and were honored at a private reception at the Boca Raton Resort & Club on April 10, 2014.
